Matt VernonSHN2 Audience recording by Richard Wethey via Uli/Hanno and company reamasterd by SirMick. [2007-09-07] From Hanno's info file "This seed is an upgrade over all circulating copies. The reel tape was carefully transferred by Gerhard Schinzel, reducing the speed problems that marred previous copies. Gerhard has had a 1st generation copy off Richard Wethey's master recording since 1976. The attribution of the 4/24/70 date to this tape is debatable. Richard's notes accompanying Gerhard's reel copy do not mention any specific day; the only information given is "Mammoth Gardens Denver 1970", which leaves the choice between 4/24 and 4/25. There is a newspaper article reviewing the second show; this article is transcribed at http://www.mail-archive.com/deadlists@nemesis.cs.berkeley.edu/msg02287.html. The fact that Man's World appears on this tape points to 4/25. Uli Teute writes on Deadlists, "I don't know how the 24th got attributed to what richard taped, but if he taped the 24. and the newspaper article is correct that would make 3 Dark Stars in a row (the 26th also has a Dark Star) - very unlikely - plus the article matches our tape just perfect. maybe we have the 25th and do not know a bit about 4-24". But see the discussion on deadlists which favors the 4/24/70 date. Up until the very end of It's a Man's World, the sound quality is very listenable (at which point its sounds compressed). The performance has the attributes of the best shows of 1970 which had its share of uneven shows. The acoustic set is solid with a nice slow IKYR. The electric portion captures the Dark Star - very fluid and melodic intro to the 1st verse, followed by a more spacey interval before going into a Tighten Up jam. Well played but typical SS > 11 are next but then a nice jam ensues and after a tape flip we have Its A Man's World (Good Lovin was not on the tape) which is a good change of pace. I would put this on the "should hear once list" for 1970. Here's the relevant bit from the Denver paper "Apromixately 90 minutes into their set, they began "Dark Star," a complex instrumental structure that included a segment that could only be described as experimental electronic. This probably has its roots in the Dead's earlier feedback experiments, but they have extended the idea intro even more exotic territory. "Dark Star" evolved effortlessly into an exuberant, joyful "St. Stephen" that, as usual, served as springboard for a fantastic musical interplay - Garcia soaring, really excited for the first time, Lesh throbbing, twisting notes out with obvious hugh pleasure. Weir erupting from his rhythm pattern to scorch the air with his own lead. The band built in an excruciating climax and then caught its breath to build to another, and another wave after wave, crescendo after crescendo, finally floating down to catch the "St. Stephen" melody again, which dissovled incredibly enough into "Good Lovin'".Pigpen sang it, grasping the microphone like Jim Morrison belting out ???? ... ??? Pigpen fashion. Abruptly, the song was James Brown's "It's
A Man's World", which metamorphised back into the "St. Stephen" instrumental. A final climax shattered the already gaping crowd. The biggest surprise was that the song was over - one had the feeling that the entire universe consisted of this perpetual motion machine known as Grateful Dead music. It had lasted 80 minutes, and it seemed like 5. Over an hour and 20 minutes, nonstop, and not once was it even slightly boring. The Dead left the stage, and their subjects screamed and stomped for at least 10 minutes for them to return. Wisely, they did not, after that devastating medly, anything else would have been painfully anticlimactic. Understatement of the Year: The Grateful Dead are terrifyingly good. They are an overwhelming, almost mystical experience. Magic is alive and well."
