In this series of trees will we will circulate the WBOTB shows on CD
and DAT. The CDs are not direct transfers from the original DAT; these
shows have been edited to some extent using Cool Edit Pro. No
equalization has been performed, but some work has been done to
eliminate the occasional click or pop, and the amount of "dead air" on
the original tapes that occurs during the reel changes has been
reduced. For this reason the DATs are run off the master CDs at 44k to
distinguish between the original WBOTB DATs and these edited versions.
This particular show has been filtered to remove the inherent whine at
and around 8 kHz.

Set list:

Disc One: Bertha, Truckin', It Hurts Me Too, Loser, Greatest
Story Ever Told-> Johnny B. Goode, Mama Tried, Hard To Handle

Disc Two: Dark Star-> Wharf Rat-> Dark Star->
Me & My Uncle, set II:, Casey Jones, Playin' In The Band, Me
And Bobby McGee

Disc Three: Candyman, Big Boss Man, Sugar Magnolia,
Saint// Stephen-> Not Fade Away-> Goin' Down The Road Feelin'
Bad-> Not Fade Away-> Uncle John's Band

Known flaws in this recording: There is a cut in Saint Stephen. There
are no clicks or pops due to digital errors. There is however the
occasional analogue type flutter and a slight rasp on one channel;
this we've inherited from the master tapes.

* first performance

The original reels of the Port Chester run of '71 were audibly
tainted due to a cable problem. The result is a tone which hovers
around 8000 Hz with an amplitude of about +20 dB above the noise
floor. This translate to a very annoying pitch, especially during quiet
sections, which is in the old-tv-tube or lousy-hard-disk or maybe even
the-sound-you-hear-after-you-slam-your-head-against-a-concrete-wall
class of 'whine'. Because this interference is 'monochromatic' it's
easy to get rid of if you have the processing power and a quick
FFT algorithm. I used the filter-shaping capabilities of the Sonic
Foundry Noise Reduction Plugin to tailor a very narrow notch filter
which attenuated the interference without affecting the rest of the
signal. And it's all done in the digital domain. Huzzah!

As a side note, I actually ended up crafting many filters to process
these shows. The frequency of the interference actually drifted anywhere
from 7700 to 8100 Hz during a given show. This was probalby due to a
slightly wandering reel speed. It made my work harder but when I tried
a much wider filter I started to be able to hear the attenuation in the
music. The filters generally go like this:

25 dB /- - - - - - - -\
/ \
/ \
0 dB | |
7830 7900 7970

The end result is no more annoying whine!

I also removed some of the nasty mic feedback in the 2/18/71 Bertha
using this type of filter.

The end result is no more annoying whine!

I also removed some of the nasty mic feedback in the 2/18/71 Bertha
using this type of filter.

Matt VernonSHN3 Show is historically notable: Mickey's last show until 10/74; earliest Betty Board(?); many song firsts - Bertha, GSET, Loser, Playin', JBG, Wharf Rat. GSET differs a fair bit from the way it is eventually played. Sound quality somewhat bright (low bass) compared to later boards but mix is balanced. St. Stephen has a cut or brief tape issue at a critical moment which diminishes the song's impact. Dark Star in set 1 has an interesting jam that made it into an official release as some filler (called the "Pretty jam?") and the sandwich of it around Wharf Rat (with the "Down by the docks of the River" lyrics) suggests they had thought about how to introduce this song, but not one of my favorite versions of this song. Overall I would say this is a solid show but not one that I wanted to immediately hear again because the energy level is just too low and set 2 has no momentum. After hgearing set 1 you are expecting some magic in set 2 but it doesn't come. Maybe they already knew Mickey was out and they were thinking of other things.... [10/4/2004]

I also removed some of the nasty mic feedback in the 2/18/71 Bertha
using this type of filter.
